These rare colour shots of HMAS Tobruk were sent to me by Terry Wright,
himself a US Coastgaurd veteran (USCGC Ingam), from Missouri, USA.
Terry's father, Ensign Carl E. Wright, USN, served in USS Cunningham
(DD-752) for both her Operational Deployments to Korea. He was the
Sonar and ASW Officer.
The Story has it that USS Cunnigham had been hit by enemy shore batteries
and had a badly damaged Radar Wave Guide (a most important piece of
apparatus). Tobruk's well set up workshop, together with her onboard
expertise, received it by way of Underway Transfer, repaired it and
sent it back.
ETN4 Jack Robinson, also a veteran of both deployments, did the repair
job aboard Cunningham and got the Radar operational again. Always
a delight to help out our Yank mates. What would you blokes do without
us?
Some
items of note here - The Land Rover with bonnet open being worked
on. All ships deploying up until the early 70's carried a ships vehicle
in the form of a Diesel Landrover. The 21" Torpedo Tubes. The
Techmatrix 292 Radar System on the twin 40/60mm. The sailors dress
of the day - even in a war zone 10As optional Shirts and Sandals.
The 'Scoops' hanging out of the scuttles endeavouring to get some
airflow into the ships compartments.
