Born 25 October 1941 died 15 September 2020. Joined RAN 29 June 1959. Left 28 June 1979. Lifer. Security Officer with ONA 1981. Joined DFA 1985 and had several postings as an S O including Moscow and Jakarta. I went to Moscow several times in 1987-88 as a diplomatic courier and he escorted me. Was a strong presence in the Writer Branch and always supportive of its classes as a mentor. He had been ill for some time. A top bloke. Sad.

Was his brother in the Stores (SV) branch, retired to Coffs Harbour? Another older brother joined before Lew and served briefly as a chef?

Vale Lew.
Condolences to his family.
Didn't know him that well. Met him after Pussers at a Writers get together at Sydney RSL. Also had close contact via phone email etc after that. I found him to be an honest decent hardworker. Also found his word was his bond!
Though about contacting him again a couple of months ago but didn't ... so sorry .. my problem now.

I was at HMAS Watson with Lew many years ago (1963) when I was still a young SA(S)2 (SMNSN) and he was a WTR; even then, very professional and a straight shooter. I catch up with Vince - ex 'Starvo' - (his brother) and have also met Kevin the other brother who was a Cook, as we all live in the Coffs Harbour area.
Sad to hear of Lew's passing.

VMT input Tim. If you are in the loop, did Captain Mick ("Stacker") Horne settle there too on retirement? Need to connect for the next S L reunion. By way of passing, missed the chance to get a good photo of Digger's or Mooney's Beach as seen from a coach as it approached from North to C H.

I ran into Mike Horn some years ago and was surprised that he had settled in this area. As per his usual demeanour, he was not interested in in any idle conversation; and I haven't seen him since.
The really good beach is Sapphire beach where we reside, just north (7Km) of Coffs.

Good oh and thanks Tim, as I understand. Reached out to include some of our SLSU 1966 gang but no response. That included Dizzy Gillespie, Bungy William, Mick Horne, Rod Purvis and maybe others known. Distance challenged and I respect their reasons. Reunions are not compulsory and I have dogged some if too far away. It is inclusive they were invited even if they did not respond for lack of interest - lest they complain afterwards?

Ignore. Repetition. Did I hear on the news that there were fatal shark attacks near C H over the years? Damned Noahs will be the death of us often.

Couple of names there ring a very distant bell .... other than the buddy 24/7 tinitus! Most are far too busy for reunions from what I am told. Either that or maybe a bit aged or not as active as they once we're ... think I qualify for both of those reasons.
